With a population of 1 352 166 and an increasing number of immigrants, Montérégie is still the second most important region in Québec. The population is spread throughout fifteen regional county municipalities (RCM) regrouped into three conférences régionales des élus (CRE). Montérégie benefits from an economic growth rate superior to Québec’s average.
The public education system in Montérégie is composed of eleven school boards (nine French and two English) that serve close to 20 per cent of Québec’s student population. There are 23 vocational training centres and 25 adult education centres. In addition, seven CEGEPs and seven university service sites are spread across the territory. Finally, the Institut de technologie agroalimentaire de Saint-Hyacinthe will be joining the education system as an educational institution.
For the past 10 years, the nine French school boards of Montérégie have been equipped with a regional centre for the recognition of competencies to ensure the centralization of recognition of prior learning and competencies services in vocational training. The centre offers more then 20 programs of study in connection with vocational training in recognition of prior learning and provides follow-up of the steps to complete the process and at the end identifying any missing elements of training.
