Recognition of prior learning and competencies in Estrie: a path that leads to qualification and graduation

Located halfway between Québec and Montérégie, Estrie covers 10 127km2. Thirty-five per cent of the territory is devoted to agriculture and its hydrographic features are at the centre of numerous recreational tourist activities. Its diversified economic structure generates jobs in all sectors and its territorial boundaries facilitate exports.

Recognition of prior learning and competencies services are supported by eight teaching establishments, including of the Commission scolaire du Région-de-Sherbrooke, the Commission scolaire des Hauts-Cantons, the Commission scolaire des Sommets and the Eastern Townships School Board and, in vocational training, Cégep de Sherbrooke, Champlain Regional College and Séminaire de Sherbrooke, all of which offer recognition of prior learning and competencies services. Université de Sherbrooke also provides such services and is part of the regional consortium.

Partners outside of the school system support the regional organization of recognition of prior learning and competencies services and include; Emploi-Québec, the Ministère de l’Immigration et des Communautés culturelles, trade unions, as well as employability organizations.

Reception, referral, counseling and support services (SARCA: services d’accueil, de référence, de conseil et d’accompagnement) is the entry point for clients from the recognition of prior learning and competencies school boards, whereas in colleges it is the continuing education and training services. Here adults will be actively listened to, have their needs clarified, receive help and, if necessary, be directed to the proper services. They will then be accompanied throughout the rest of the process.
